Sorry I’ve been out the past couple of weeks. I’ve been under the weather and didn’t plan ahead with my blog posts. Oops! I’m happy to be back!
During this long journey of trying to physically heal, I got to thinking about my beauty routine. Mainly, my hair. I was looking in the mirror the other day noticed the greys popping out and the dry ends whispering, “Trim me so I can grow”. Then I realized I had a jar of unrefined coconut oil left over from my failed attempt to use something “natural” to heal the eczema I developed on my legs early winter. Turns out I needed something stronger, medical grade lotion as it turned out. And let’s face it, the familiar meme speaks some truth, coconut oil seems to be the remedy for just about everything! Well, not everything…but it’s close! Lol.
In an ironic twist, I’m not a fan of coconut in general. Sure, the scent is OK — nothing to write home about. Anyway, the main point here is that I didn’t want the precious oil to go to waste, so I started slathering it on my scalp and hair three times a week. I take a “glob”, my scientific description for a palm full, rub it around until it’s about 1/2 melted, smear it on my scalp and comb it through with my fingers to the end of the strands. Then I pull my hair back, leaving the oil in hair for 1-2 hours depending on how much time I have.
I’ll admit, when I started using it again, it was just to protect my hair from drying out during these winter months. And overall I feel like it’s working. I’ve noticed that my hair is softer, a little less dry and frizzy, and my scalp somehow feels soothed. Eventually, I decided to start reading more about its benefits and it turns out we stand to gain a lot from using this stuff! Do I sound like an advertisement yet? 😉
Turns out, coconut oil doesn’t just make our hair look pretty, it protects hair from heat damage and strengthens hair from the inside-out by protecting it from protein loss which can also slow down hair loss. It also promotes a healthy scalp by fighting against dryness (dandruff), lice, and even insect bites. It even provides protection from bacteria and viral infections and fortifies hair by preventing breakage and split ends. Hello, coconut oil!
